Trauma, Connection and Recovery: An Adlerian Integrative Perspective with Anthea Millar
To be traumatised needs to be understood primarily as a moment of disconnection, a sense of being alone with the terror. From an Adlerian point of view this is the ultimate experience of extreme inferiority and loss of social belonging. Our deep need to overcome these worst experiences means we do our utmost to compensate for these feelings, with the common symptoms of post-traumatic stress being valiant attempts to safeguard ourselves and our well-being.
In recent years there has been a greatly increased understanding of the complex interactions of neurobiology and psychosocial aspects of trauma which has enabled the development of more effective, and essentially, safer trauma therapy. Here the focus is on building connection, achieving physiological regulation and improving the quality of life now.
Anthea will offer an overview of Adler’s history and holistic biopsychosocial approach in relation to trauma, linking with the recent work of Peter Levine, Bessel van der Kolk, Babette Rothschild, Dan Siegel, Stephen Porges and Deb Dana. Differing from some traditional therapy that focused mainly on trauma memory resolution, these key leaders in the field offer invaluable new perspectives, that resonate well with an Adlerian approach.
Exploring and connecting with our creativity with Bruce Tate
We are all creative and yet there are times when we feel stuck. There are times when we cannot see outcomes or solutions and may then hold ourselves back. Creativity is important in all aspects of our lives and particularly now when we are faced with the many challenges from lockdown and many other restrictions. How do we face the challenges before us and what new choices and possibilities might we explore? How can we learn from the creativity of other and reconnect with our own creative powers?
During this 90 minute session I will present some ideas and questions and there will be an opportunity for confidential conversations in small groups. No prior knowledge is needed – anyone and everyone is welcome who would like to come along with a sense of curiosity. Bring some paper and coloured pens if you like (you will not be asked to show anyone else anything that you do create). Join us for as long as you like and have some fun exploring creativity and hearing from one another. Have some coloured pens and paper or other creativity materials to hand.
Motivational Interviewing with Jon Sperry Ph.D.
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an encouraging counseling approach that helps to elicit and strengthen motivation for change in counseling, coaching, and education settings. This counseling approach is highly compatible and consistent with the philosophies that are articulated by Adlerians. Over 200 controlled clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing among clients with various presenting issues. This course will include various MI demonstrations and counseling practice opportunities.
