His first post as a psychologist was with National Learning Network (Rehab Group) where he provided support to adults with learning and/or mental health difficulties at centres in Cavan, Meath, Louth and his native Monaghan.

In recent years he has concentrated on the whole area of wellness, happiness and resilience. His ‘Moodwatchers’ self-help psychology course has been delivered to the general public at community venues in every county in Ireland over the last decade.

Shane aligns himself to the school of Positive Psychology which investigates the strengths rather than weaknesses in people. He is passionate about the need for psychology to be applied to help people become stronger and mentally prepared for the inevitable crises that are part of life’s journey. If we want to be happier, healthier and more resilient, we have to work on strategies scientifically proven to make a difference in these key areas. Moodwatchers sets out to teach everyone these essential life skills.

Shane is a leading psychologist within the area of education. His Moodwatchers programme has been adapted to reach teachers and children in hundreds of primary and secondary schools nationwide. He has worked extensively with principals, guidance counsellors, learning support teachers and chaplains. He has been a keynote speaker at numerous national conferences within the field of education.

Together with New Beginning (the non-for-profit organisation supporting people in financial crisis) Shane has recently launched a national initiative called ‘Bouncing Back’ which will bring free self-help psychology to people experiencing financial pressure. The first step of this initiative sees the delivery of a series of self-help seminars throughout the country.

Lecturing part-time in DCU, he also provides training to many leading organisations throughout Ireland within the public and private sector. In recent months, he has provided consultancy and training to management teams within HSE and VEC sectors regarding ‘change management’ as amalgamations take place. He has provided training to mental health teams and multi-disciplinary teams attached to hospitals and hospices.

Shane is a published poet of two collections – The Dark Room and Stilling the Dance of Time. He is currently working on his third collection entitled Thin Lines. His poems have been published in reputable national and international poetry journals. He has been a guest at poetry festivals including the Patrick Kavanagh Weekend and has read his poems at many school and community gatherings. He is currently under contract with a leading Irish publisher to write his first self-help psychology book, which will be in the shops in early 2014.
