Presenter: Larry O\'Reilly. Larry O’Reilly  is a qualified Addiction Counsellor and Member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers. He has delivered MI training at various levels to healthcare professionals. Also, he has worked over a 10yr period within the criminal justice system as a prison mentor and support worker. 

Workshop Outline: Develop a greater understanding of how MI compliments other treatments and therapies.

A lecture style presentation will be provided to introduce the theory and process of MI with the use of good video vignettes by Miller, Rollneck and other experienced practicioners of MI to demonstrate the principles and micro skills of MI. The prmary focus within the day will be the practical experiencial “practice by doing” dynamic exercises to assist the participant to experience working in an MI adherent way.

Key specifics to be discussed and practiced will be:

The Spirit of MI - Focusing on Automy, Collaboration and Evocation

The principles of MI - Rolling with Resistance, Avoiding Argumentation, Expressing Empathy and Supporting Self-Efficacy

Technique of MI -Open-Ended Questions, Affirmations, Reflections (simple, complex, double sided and more) and Summaries

Training Level: Introductory Level Workshop
