Working with Aspergers Syndrome in a
therapeutic setting.
Presenter:Diarmuid Heffernan has worked for many years with people with Asperges as part of the Autism Spectrum Diagnosis. He has presented many workshops on this subject and is a founding member of the Certificate and Diploma course on Autism studies in UCC. He teaches on the course along with many years working with people with Asperges/Autism.
Presenter:Kirsten Hurley is the programme co-ordinator for the Certificate & Diploma course in Autism studies in UCC and lectures and tutors on these programmes. Along with Diarmuid she has presented many workshops on this topic. Kirsten herself has a diagnosis of Aspergers Syndrome. The workshop will be presented on information and will be interactive.
Workshop Outline:Some of the areas to be addressed include: What is ASD - Recognising Asperges/ASD in the Therapy room. Creating the right therapeutic space for the client with Asperges/ASD. The client with ASD and the sensory issues - public and private spaces. Working with a client with ASD - breaking some myths (eg lack of empathy). The client with ASD and family systems and relationships. Bullying and the specificity of its legacy for the client. People with ASD and fun.
Training Level: Advanced.
