In Person - SRC Working compassionately with shame in the counselling room
Presenter's Bio:
Fergus made a career change in 2008 when I became a full-time Counsellor. My previous career was in Mechanical Engineering and training. I believe the best qualities in Counselling are not in our training and Counselling skills but our love, respect and genuine interest and value we show to our clients. I benefit greatly from the nurturing presence of a spiritual connection as a personal support to my practice.
Event Outline:
In this workshop we will address the following:
- What shame is and why it is different from guilt
- The strong associations shame has with trauma, attachment, addictions and other mental health conditions
- Why shame is such a powerful master emotion and significantly impacts our behaviour
- The neurological effects of shame on minds and bodies.
- The different male and female response to living with shame
- How mindful self-compassion and CFT are effective therapeutic interventions and can enhance our wellbeing and improve our mental health
- How various spiritual supports can be of benefit.
The workshop will include discussions groups, reflective and mindfulness type exercises.
Shame is often present in the counselling room, but not immediately visible or apparent when clients present with issues like trauma, depression, anxiety, anger, low self-worth, eating and other mental health disorders. In this workshop we will look at identifying how shame is a life controlling emotion that can affect everyday life. We will demonstrate how modelling and encouraging self-compassion to our clients can facilitate healing and significantly improve the clients wellbeing and help restore their unique identity. As therapists we can help clients to develop skills to stop being triggered by life-controlling traumatic shame by introducing meditation, mindfulness and reflective practices.
CPD Certs will be emailed to participants after attendance at the Event
